The Ups and Downs of Raising a Plant

Becoming a responsible adult doesn’t just happen overnight.

The first phase of responsibility is all about me, myself, and I. You’re in full survival mode — making sure rent is paid on time, trying not going to get fired at work, but still living it up on the weekends. In the second phase, all the sudden you feel this instinctual need to step up your game and take care of something other than yourself.

Carson and I are beginning to experience that second phase.

How do I become more responsible? Can I handle this? How much is too much? This could be the next big step…am I ready for it?

Lately, we have been asking ourselves that last question. We are really comfortable talking about stuff like that because we have to make sure our future is actually bright, ya know? Since we already live together, the next big steps we often discuss are the BIG ones — marriage and kids.

Even though it is far down the timeline, we came to the conclusion that going from just the two of us to having a child is a pretty big step up in responsibility. To plan ahead, we considered getting a dog as a trial run for parenthood but overall it still felt like a lot of time, money, and patience that I just am not ready to dish out constantly.

That’s when we knew we had to take it down another notch…and get a love fern.

You may be laughing at the idea but I really think that Kate Hudson was onto something in How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days!

Top 10 reasons to raise a plant:

  1. *Technically* you’re taking care of a living thing
  2. You know exactly what food it likes (aka water)
  3. It adds to your home
  4. You’re able to take turns caring for it
  5. It doesn’t pee on the carpet
  6. There’s no unexpected crying in the middle of the night
  7. You can pick out the exact breed that you want
  8. Others have experience whom you can turn to for advice
  9. You can watch it grow up overtime
  10. You can always try for another

There is still the risk that you can kill it…which would be pretty tragic considering it’s on the lowest end of the responsibility scale…when in doubt, get fake plants.
